Compress an image to a maximum KB size
Choose a file-size limit for a photo without uploading it. minimage adjusts JPEG or WebP quality, checks the actual output bytes and lets you download only a result that meets your maximum.
Start with 50 KB Start with 100 KB Start with 200 KB
How to make a photo smaller
- Choose a limit above, then select your photo. The editor shows the selected maximum and JPEG format; you can change either.
- Enter the pixel dimensions required by the destination, or leave them blank to keep the original dimensions. Use JPEG only when your destination accepts it.
- Keep “Allow smaller dimensions” off if exact dimensions matter. Turn it on only if the destination accepts a smaller image.
- Choose Resize image. Review the output dimensions, exact byte count and the downloaded photo at normal viewing size before submitting.
What the size limit means
The maximum uses decimal KB: 50 KB is 50,000 bytes, 100 KB is 100,000 bytes and 200 KB is 200,000 bytes. A result can be smaller than the maximum. The tool does not pad files to an exact size or enforce a minimum file size.
Some portals specify a range, such as a minimum as well as a maximum. Compare the actual bytes against both. A correctly sized file can still be rejected for framing, background, format or readability. Check the current instructions for your particular application; our document-photo presets link to their sources.
Why a limit might be unreachable
A detailed image at large dimensions can remain too large even at low quality. minimage makes a bounded search and stops with an explanation if it cannot find a fitting result. It never labels an oversized file as successful. Try a higher limit or deliberately reduce dimensions. If dimensions must stay fixed, increase the limit only if your destination permits it.
JPEG and WebP use the quality setting as a starting maximum. PNG remains lossless: quality changes cannot shrink it, so it may require smaller dimensions or another format. Optional dimension reduction stops before the shorter side drops below 64 pixels; this is a processing safeguard, not a document-photo specification.
Your original stays unchanged
Image processing happens in your browser. minimage does not upload your photo, overwrite the source file, crop it, change its background or guarantee acceptance by an application portal. Export removes metadata. Download your result before closing the tab.
